Powerful Processor

If you’re looking for “engineering laptops,” I highly recommend going for a computer that comes with a fast processor. Doing so makes sure your device can keep up with your applications, and more.

HP Spectre x360

The HP Spectre sports an elegant and sleek design, UNLIKE other bulky and thick laptops out there.

Because of its design, the whole body looks modern, stunning, and chic. Lay this computer on top of your desk, and you’ve got yourself a looker.

Undeniably, the build of the HP Spectre more or less has the same build as any other laptops. But here’s where it stands out: the HP Spectre CAN FOLD BACKWARD! You read that right!

Not only is this a laptop, but you can fold the HP Spectre to be a tablet. Doesn’t that sound awesome?!

Performance

I loved how the HP Spectre came with a pretty decent processor. Thanks to its quad-core setup, you can reasonably expect a fast and smooth performance each time.

No matter how heavy and intense the software is, the HP Spectre WON’T HAVE A HARD TIME keeping up with you.

Safe to say, you can always rely on the HP Spectre to perform at its best all the time. This is one of the best laptop for engineering software!

BUT there’s a drawback…

Be wary of its cooling technology. The HP Spectre doesn’t handle the heat very well. What I mean by that is…don’t overwork it.

Or if you do, consider getting a cooling pad.

RAM and Storage

There’s a ton of flexibility when it comes to the RAM and storage of this computer. You’ve got a choice between getting 8 to 16GB of RAM, and 512GB to 2TB of storage.

Now, getting the standard 8GB of RAM and 512GB of storage is pretty decent in itself. Performance remains smooth, so there’s nothing much I can complain about.

The storage size is large enough for us to save our documents, data, and more.

However, I always recommend going all-in and getting the highest RAM and storage possible. After all, you’ll be using this as an engineering laptop. And if that’s the case, you want to make sure you choose the best specs for all sorts of scenarios.

How to Find the Best Laptops for Engineering Students: A Buying Guide

There’s a ton of laptops out there, but HOW DO YOU KNOW if it’s appropriate for engineering students? And in the first place, is there such a thing as the best laptop for engineering students?

Well, just to clear some things…

There’s NO SPECIFIC TYPE of laptop out there that’s labeled as the “Best Laptop for Engineering Student.”

Instead, what you’ll find are powerful laptops that have a strong and impressive set of specs.

Now, there are several factors to consider to help engineering students find the best laptops for themselves. What these are, I’ll discuss below.

CPU

The first thing you should always look at when looking for a laptop for engineering students is the CPU or its processing power.

You have to remember, engineering students will be using the laptop for different engineering-related programs.

And when this is the case, the laptop NEEDS to be well-equipped with the right CPU to make sure it runs smoothly.

Unfortunately, this is one of the most overlooked factors when it comes to finding the best laptops for engineers.

Not a lot of buyers take into consideration that programs like AUTOCAD, MATLAB, among others, are pretty heavy.

Strong processing power is always ideal. No matter how many programs you run at the same time, everything will still run smoothly. So just imagine what the state of your laptop will be like if you choose a low CPU. Yikes!

GPU

Another important factor to consider is the graphics of your computer.

Like what I’ve mentioned earlier, engineering software needs a lot of CPU power. At the same time, it should also have a solid graphics card.

Having a good GPU lets you load the graphics of the software faster and efficiently, regardless of how intensive the program is. And a good thing about this is that you can enjoy in great detail whatever it is you’re crafting.

Do note that the purpose of having a great GPU isn’t just for loading the software. You can also enjoy the great graphics for viewing HD images, videos, and more.

Hard Drive and Storage

As a general rule, I always recommend choosing an SSD hard drive rather than an HDD.

SSD’s tend to load data faster and efficiently. Nevertheless, an HDD should perform just as well.

Now, as to the storage, the more the better.

TAKE NOTE: engineering students work on a lot of projects and files that need to be saved on their laptops. As much as possible, you want to be able to conveniently save all your files on one device.

To stay on the safe side, a 512GB to 1TB device storage should be enough. You can even find some that have up to 2TB storage capacity!

Finally, a factor worth considering is the upgradability of your RAM and storage. In the future, should you find RAM or storage to be lacking, you at least have the option to upgrade it to your liking. This is a great money-saver tip!

FAQs

Is There a Specific Brand That Makes the Best Laptop for Engineering Students?

There’s no specific brand out there that manufactures an engineering laptop. Like what I’ve mentioned earlier, what makes an engineering laptop has a lot to deal with is its power and specs.

That said, engineering students should always look at the specs of the laptop before the brand.

No matter how well-known the brand is, if it doesn’t have the right specs to run engineering software, it will be for nothing.

HOWEVER.

This is not to say the brand doesn’t matter. Brands like ASUS, Lenovo, HP, Dell, and Acer are great choices. Reliability wise, either ASUS or Lenovo laptops are ideal choices for students. Dell also lasts you a long time.

As a useful tip, consider the programs that you plan to install on your laptop.

Right after, check the device requirements of the software so that you know what device it is compatible with. Failure to do so would be detrimental because you’ll end up with a useless device.

Is an Engineering Laptop Expensive?

When you think of a laptop for engineering students, the image you probably have in mind are those high-end and over-the-top devices out there.

Those could cost you a FORTUNE and leave you with a big hole in your pocket!

Well, truth be told, you don’t need a very expensive laptop. There’s a ton of affordable devices out there that have outstanding specs without causing you a fortune.

However, do note that there should at least be a reasonable expectation on your part that you’ll spend quite an amount of money. After all, you’ll be buying a laptop with an advanced processor, graphics card, among others.

Now, if you don’t need a very advanced laptop, then you can do away with choosing the basic specifications on a laptop.

Top Picks

I sure named a lot of amazing and outstanding devices perfect for an engineering student in this review. Each comes with a ton of awesome and unique features that are sure to outmatch your regular laptops.

But of all the products I’ve mentioned, there are two which I crown as the best picks you should check out.

Runner Up: Dell XPS

Coming in second in this list is no other than Dell’s XPS 15 7590. It’s one of those devices perfect for everyday use, whether it’s for engineering or college students.

Overall, I can safely say that the Dell XPS 15 comes with a ton of power. So much so, it won’t have any difficulty handling all engineering applications and tasks students need to work on.

Winner: Asus ZenBook Pro Duo UX581

For many years, Asus has been one of the leading brands when it comes to laptops.

They’ve manufactured some of the best and quality laptops, regardless of the price range. This is why it shouldn’t come as a surprise that their ZenBook Pro Duo UX581 is crowned winner in this list.

The Pro Duo UX581 comes with an impressive set of features you can’t find anywhere else. Its display and performance alone are enough to impress and convince you that this is what it means to be the best laptop out there.
