My Overall Verdict

As long as I’m talking about enhanced graphics performance, amazing processing power, high SSD storage, and a high-quality graphics card, the price is justifiable.

It also has a quad-core processor, which is a stand-out among this list. Plus, you’re already getting a tablet and a laptop in one. That’s a pretty great deal.

I had to think twice and assess if it’s just my bias for the Surface Book series talking. But after a thorough review, it’s not!

For architecture students who love to play games, this is the perfect 2-in-1 laptop for you. That’s why I think it has the best value!

Its central processing unit can surely handle hardcore graphic software.

Although I must say, it’s quite expensive for a laptop that isn’t quite at par with my best overall pick. But in terms of the price range for gaming laptops, this is already reasonable.

My Overall Verdict

If all you need is a decent Windows laptop that can handle CAD software and modeling software at a decent pace, this one from ASUS is more than sufficient.

The price is more than half the price of professional laptops, so don’t expect it to function as well as those with quad-core processors.

My Overall Verdict

Although I say “reasonable price,” I’m also well aware that the laptop’s pricing can still be high.

However, it’s still a powerful laptop, so I think it’s worth it because the ROI (Return of Investment) will be high anyway.

The battery life is not bad. It can run for around 4 hours maximum, which is already a good stretch for someone using architecture software.

However, this might be a problem for a professional architect who has projects left and right unless you’re using it as a PC and you can have it plugged in all the time.

But if you’re an architecture student, considering this would be a good choice!

My Overall Verdict

To be fair, it’s hard to expect the strongest battery life for laptops that deliver 4K resolutions. Even those with the highest graphics cards won’t have that type of battery strength.

So aside from the battery life, I think this Lenovo model is an excellent laptop for architects and architecture students.

It can handle architectural software and modeling software quite well!

My Overall Verdict

I have tried our fair shares of using the Apple laptop, and honestly, I wouldn’t easily recommend the older Macbook Pro.

But with their new M1 chip processor, it has proven its capability for architecture software!

If you’re architecture students who also use your laptop for other school work, I recommend getting a Macbook pro for maximum performance.

I know it isn’t the Intel Core i7 processor or NVIDIA Geforce GTX that you’re looking for – but the M1 power will surprise you!

The only inconvenience would be its incompatibility with non-Mac software and other Windows laptops. This has been a known Apple thing – it takes a lot of effort to work around compatibility.

It’s one of the best laptops for architecture students, without a doubt.

The graphics card and other specs are at par with the premium-priced laptops for architects listed above, but this one didn’t even hit the $1000 price mark yet.

Besides architectural purposes, you can use the graphics card and other features for gaming too!

There’s not much to say anymore. Looking at the specs and comparing it with the expensive laptop choices already says enough.

What to Look For: Best Laptop for Architecture

Though there are no specific laptops allocated solely for architecture, there are many good laptops in the market that can answer your demands.

So it pays to know what to expect, especially if you are in the architecture industry.

REMEMBER: ALL laptop users have different sets of needs, so pay close attention to these considerations so that you can find the one that suits you the most.

Specifications

Like any other gadget, the specs are crucial. For instance, knowing the type of processor will already tell you how the laptop will perform.

It’s best to assess your workload first – what will you use your laptop for?

From there, you can scout the market for the specs that can handle your tasks. Keep in mind, though, that the higher the specs, the more expensive it is.

Speed

The problem with high specs laptops, there is a potential for it to slow down. I’m not joking when I say the software requires strong processing power.

If you want to be more efficient and effective, always opt for a fast laptop.

In my opinion, the Mac OS is a top player when it comes to speed. Windows, if not maintained properly, is prone to viruses and lagging.

Memory and Storage

A laptop for architecture students should have good memory storage. The software alone will already take up most of your storage space. And indeed, you have other files to store too.

Though there are multiple ways to work around memory – like hard drives, flash drives, etc. – having ample space built-in to the actual laptop will make life so much easier.

Graphics Quality

The best laptop for architects should also have impressive graphics. A big chunk of your outputs will be visual, so not having this edge would highly tamper with your work.

You can’t render and determine the proper resolutions if your graphics are poor. It’s best to go for 4K resolutions if you can.

Screen Quality, Size, and Resolutions

In line with graphics, it’s also important to consider everything related to the screen. Be it the physical size – how big do you want your screen to be? Are you satisfied with narrower screens?

The same goes for quality and resolutions. No matter how high your GPU is, if your screen can’t reflect the quality you want, you won’t see it.

That’s why some are specifying that their screens reveal the true colors – meaning, what you’re seeing is not manipulated or a lower resolution; it’s the actual color!

Compatibility and Ecosystem

The best laptop for architecture for you is the one that can make life easier for you. What do I mean?

You would have other devices and gadgets used for working or studying. Getting a laptop that is incompatible with other devices would be a significant roadblock to efficiency.

Let’s say you’re in the Apple ecosystem.

For instance, when you have an iPhone and iPad, it would probably be wiser to go for a Macbook. The interconnection of the system will help you a lot,

Battery Life

The last thing you want in a laptop for architecture students can’t handle the capacity needed for architectural outputs.

I’ve tried using a laptop that shuts down in 4 hours – that’s not even enough to finish HALF of the output.

Trust me, always consider the longevity of the battery life when choosing a laptop for architects. It will make the accomplishment of the job 10x easier if the laptop isn’t constantly draining.

Having to charge it repeatedly, and using it while charging, will also weaken the battery strength and the laptop’s overall performance.

Purpose and Usage

It’s better to have a device that’s versatile and multi-purpose. If you’re a gamer, you’d be getting the value of your money if your device can do both.

For students, on the other hand, a tablet and laptop in one device would be the most practical. You won’t necessarily need the gaming processors, only the graphic resolutions.

You see? The possibilities are endless, and situations are different. Enjoy the process of choosing the best one for you.

Price

I know that budget is something that you should highly consider. And you should!

After all, the price doesn’t necessarily determine the best performance.

The best laptop for you can be the most affordable one. It’s just a matter of how you take care and use it.

But I’ll also be honest. If you want the BEST performing laptop for architects, you’d have to consider splurging a bit on more premium ones.

Portability and Weight

Some use the laptop in a PC setup. For this, there’s no problem if the device is a bit heavier in weight.

The thing is, most architects or architecture students are always on the go.

The job requires you to move aroundsite visits, meetings, and such. If so, consider the weight of the laptop too.

Aesthetic Design

Although not the topmost priority, some people look for visuals in considering the best laptop. While specs and price are more important, I also support getting a “cool-looking” device.

This category includes the color, shape, corners, and all the other things for visual purposes!

Your Other Considerations

Of course, you can have other considerations that I didn’t mention. These are just the general things people look for when looking for a laptop for architecture students.

There’s nothing wrong with being choosy!

Best Laptop for Architecture: Question and Answer [Q&A] 

I’ll dedicate this section to addressing the questions I’ve seen regarding this topic.

Which Is Better for a Laptop for Architecture Students: Mac or Windows?

Most of the laptops for architects I’ve listed above have Windows OS – mainly because most brands have this one instead of the exclusivity of Apple and the Mac OS.

NOTE: For those who don’t know, only Apple products have the Mac OS.

In our opinion, both are good if I’m talking about specs. There are pros and cons with either, so it all boils down to your circumstances.

If you generally have Apple products, then getting the Macbook Pro would be a better idea.

With the emergence of M1 chips and Apple’s stronger processors, they’re becoming excellent options for a laptop for architects.

But in line with the OS exclusivities, Windows have better compatibilities. Connecting with universal devices and software would be easier with this OS.

What’s the Preferred RAM Size for an Architecture Laptop?

The preferred SSD storage is 1 TB and beyond. For memory and RAM, the minimum memory size is 16 GB, but the size I highly recommend is 32 GB.

As you can see from the list above, most laptops go beyond the minimum, so you don’t have to worry about that!

Does AutoCAD Work With Any Laptop?

First things first: for those who don’t know, AutoCAD is a computer-aided design and drafting software commonly used by architects and architecture students.

Because of the outputs it produces, it can be taxing for an ordinary laptop. To guide you, here are the system requirements of AutoCAD:

  • Operating System: 64-bit Windows 10.
  • Processor: 2.5 GHz (3+ GHz recommended)
  • Memory: 8 GB (16GB recommended)
  • Disk space: 10.0 GB.
  • Display: 1920 x 1080 resolution with True Color.

So far, almost all of our suggestions pass the requirements. There are some configurations needed for Apple compatibility, though. But system-wise, it’s all good.

Does AutoCAD Require Graphics Cards?

It’s good to have one in case you’ll need it, of course. But for the record, AutoCAD is heavier in video cards because it displays 2D and 3D movements.

If you’re looking to work on 3D models, it would be best to get a GPU. But note that these things are expensive.

So if you’re on a budget, and you don’t need to heavily work with 3D models, you can focus more on getting better RAM, CPU, and SSD instead – which are generally easier to achieve.

 Is the Core i7 Processor Good Enough for Architecture?

It’s the preferred processor for architecture software. If you can go beyond, then the BETTER.

But the core i7 is already more than capable of running those demanding programs.

Core i5 is in the middle. It’s not the best, and expect some lags and delays, but it still works.

If you’re working with core i3, however, I suggest going for an upgrade. You will have a hard time running those programs efficiently with processors on this level or lower.

 What Are the Best Specs for a Laptop for Architecture?

While I’m on the topic of processors, here are other general specs that you might want to see in a laptop you’re eyeing.

  • Processor: Intel i7 or i9
  • Operating Systems: Windows 10 x 64
  • Memory Storage: 16-32 RAM GB
  • Dedicated Video Processor: Nvidia Quadro, Nvidia® Geforce 1060, 1660, 2060, 3060, AMD Radeon Pro 5500M/5600M or of higher grades

Why Do Some Laptops Reach More Than $5,000?
