Features:

  • 11th-gen Intel Core i5 chip
  • NVidia GeForce RTX 3050
  • 8GB of RAM
  • 144Hz Full HD IPS display
  • 512GB storage capacity

Starting strong with the best laptop on this list, I’d like to present you with the Asus TUF F17. This is the best gaming laptop if you’re on a budget, and it’s easy to see why!

This laptop’s RTX 3050 graphics card is an excellent starter GPU and pairs nicely with its 8GB of DDR4 RAM. I’m also a fan of this laptop’s build quality.

Asus’ TUF line is famed for its military-grade durability, so you can rest assured that you’re getting a powerful laptop inside and out.

While I love everything else about the TUF F17, I wish it also had a long battery life. I could only get 3-4 hours on a single charge, and that was with light use.

Powering this laptop’s full HD display takes a lot out of the battery, but its performance makes this a practical issue. You can pick up a TUF F17 here.

  • Full HD display

The second 17-inch laptop I have for you is the VivoBook 17. If you’re looking for casual or business laptops, this one’s for you!

A VivoBook is a plain package that hides its adaptability and doesn’t excel in any field. Make no mistake; this 17-inch laptop is an all-rounder that can do a bit of everything.

This laptop has versatility. Its Intel Core i5 chip will get you through more CPU-bound tasks, and the 16GB of RAM will pick up the slack everywhere else.

The Iris XE graphics on this laptop are comparable to entry-level AMD Radeon graphics. Unfortunately, it’ll run lighter games, but nothing like Horizon Zero Dawn.

If you’re burning the midnight oil, the VivoBook 17 has a decent backlit keyboard, but I recommend keeping it plugged in. You can get it here.

Features:

  • 17-inch HD display
  • 1TB SSD

Now, for the cheapest 17-inch laptop on this list, the Acer Aspire 3! It may be affordable, but don’t let its attractive price fool you.

The Aspire 3 is one of Acer’s budget offerings, and they’ve managed to focus on just the vitals. For example, this 17-inch laptop doesn’t have a dedicated graphics card.

It doesn’t have a GPU, but it packs a nice bright display with a 1920×1080 resolution. Fortunately, it also has wide viewing angles, so you won’t have to worry about distorted colors.

The Aspire 3’s typing experience isn’t stellar, but serviceable. You’ll be fine if you don’t hammer away at your keys.

An unbeatable price-to-performance ratio is worth a few hiccups, like a lack of USB-C ports and a plastic shell. Pick up your Aspire 3 here.

Time for another gaming laptop. If you haven’t noticed, many 17-inch laptops are geared more toward gaming than anything else.

MSI’s GF75 Thin is a classic 17-inch laptop that’s known for delivering good gaming performance at a reasonable price.

As its name implies, the Thin isn’t as bulky as other gaming laptops, so it’s easier to carry in your backpack. It’s a lifesaver for students who want to game.

The Intel Core CPU and graphics card in this 17-inch device are a great pairing, but all that processing power generates a fair amount of heat. I recommend getting a cooling pad for this gaming laptop.

Features:

  • 11th-gen Intel Core i5 chip
  • Intel Iris XE graphics
  • 8GB of RAM
  • 512GB SSD
  • Full HD IPS display

This is the higher-specced relative of the Aspire 3 above, and it shares many of the same things that make the Aspire series a mainstay, including an Intel Core CPU and a killer display.

It’s packed with Iris XE graphics, a significant step up from old-school Intel UHD graphics, and carries enough power to play lighter games.

The Aspire 5 also packs a pair of stereo speakers, which didn’t blow me away, but they’ll be powerful enough for movie night.

One slight gripe, though: Acer soldered a 4GB stick of RAM onto this device, which limits the performance you can squeeze out of it.

Apart from that small issue, the Aspire 5 is a great laptop! You can pick one up No products found..

PROS

  • Backlit keyboard and fingerprint reader
  • Upgradable storage
  • Great for daily usage

CONS

  • Stock RAM is low

Features:

  • 10th-gen Intel Core i7 chip
  • NVidia GeForce MX230
  • 16GB of RAM
  • 2TB HDD
  • FHD Display

The Inspiron is a Dell laptop that seems to pop up everywhere, and that’s because almost every model offers great value for the money!

If you need a 17-inch laptop that effectively crosses between 2 tech generations, I recommend getting this Inspiron. Newer Inspirons are fancier, but some of them only have USB-C ports.

On the other hand, this Intel Core-equipped device packs a CD drive if you need to back up older photo disks digitally. In another odd choice, this laptop has a dedicated GPU.

NVidia’s MX230 has enough grunt to help you blast through slightly older hits like Fallout 4 and Skyrim, but don’t push this 17-inch laptop too hard!

While Inspiron has Intel turbo boost technology, its cooling system is also lackluster. You can pick up an Inspiron here.

Features:

  • 11th-gen Intel Core i5 chip
  • Intel Iris XE graphics

  • FHD IPS display

If you need a sturdy 17-inch laptop for the whole family, I recommend the HP 17. This HP laptop is built for productivity and light leisure activities.

I was initially pleased to see an aluminum chassis adoring this laptop, but I found a plastic underside to the chassis. This is still a budget model, so that’s to be expected.

Despite the chassis being half-plastic, the HP 17’s still quite strong. I pressed down on its deck, and the deck pushed back instead of flexing.

The main highlight of this laptop during my testing was the touchpad, which has discrete mouse buttons, to avoid any dead spots and clicking issues. I loved its responsiveness!

With an Intel Core i5 chip and tons of RAM, the HP 17 is built for anything. You can get one here.

8) Lenovo Legion 5

Features:

  • AMD Ryzen 5 5600
  • NVidia GeForce GTX 1650
  • 32GB of RAM
  • 144Hz display
  • 1TB SSD

Any model from Lenovo’s Legion series will give you good performance, but this Legion 5 is a decently powerful gaming laptop for under $1000.

I’ve always liked the Legion series because most of their USB ports are on the back of the device, which is great for keeping your laptop desk neat.

Now, you may have noticed the ludicrous amount of RAM that this laptop’s equipped with, and it’s no joke! Even if your GPU’s 4GB of VRAM can’t keep up, the rest of your RAM will.

However, this laptop’s GTX 1650 is starting to show its age. While it’s a great entry-level graphics card, it’s not strong enough for high or ultra settings in more modern games.

You can pick up this Legion 5 here.

PROS

  • An extremely high amount of RAM
  • Comprehensive cooling system
  • A subtle design is suitable for all settings

CONS

  • GPU is slightly older
  • Thick and bulky profile

9) Lenovo IdeaPad 3

Features:

  • 11th-gen Intel Core i7 chip
  • Intel Iris XE graphics
  • 8GB of RAM
  • HD+ Display
  • 512GB SSD

The IdeaPad line from Lenovo has long been a laptop designed for everyone: Jack of all trades, master of none. However, this IdeaPad 3 is a master of having great viewing angles!

Its wide screen is great whether you want to watch movies or TV shows, and a blazing-fast Intel Core i7 chip further supplements it.

You won’t have trouble streaming videos with this bad boy, but beware: Your unit might have a lower display resolution. Some IdeaPad 3s have the standard 1920×1080 resolution, which is fine.

However, some units have a 1600×900 resolution. If you’ve never seen this resolution, be grateful. It looks weird and may induce dizziness in a larger display.

Apart from the screen, this IdeaPad has an all-plastic chassis that flexes under pressure, so be careful! You can get one here.

PROS

  • Comfortable typing experience
  • The webcam has a built-in privacy shutter
  • Lightweight and portable

CONS

  • Some models have a lower screen resolution
  • TN Display

Buyer’s Guide on How to Choose the Best 17 Inch Laptop Under 1000

Before picking up the first 17-inch laptop you see, I invite you to read this section briefly. It’ll help give you a better idea of which features are most important to you.

I haven’t listed these in any order of importance, and no one laptop model will have every feature you need. This is more of a general guide.

Purpose

No, this isn’t meant to be a deep question, so pay attention. If you’re a student who needs something for classes and maybe some light gaming in between, you’ll need a gaming laptop.

This means you’ll be looking for discrete GPUs, like an NVidia GeForce GTX card or better. You’ll also need a 17-inch laptop with a beefier cooling system to accommodate the heat.

However, you’ll probably need a business laptop if you’re a professional. You can ignore anything with a discrete graphics card and stick with good old integrated graphics.

I’m biased, but gaming laptops can do anything that a business laptop can, plus you can use them to unwind when you have some downtime. But I digress.

Keep your needs in mind when looking for the best 17-inch laptop!

CPU

All programs require a minimum amount of processing power to run. Using your laptop for casual use shouldn’t be a problem, but what if you have heavier programs to run?

Modern games, complex design programs, and even bulky Excel files can push your CPU to its limits. Unless you’ve got a large cooling pad, you’ll need a CPU with enough processing power.

I recommend getting a 17-inch laptop with at least a 9th-gen Intel core i7 chip or a Ryzen 5-equipped device. If you want to extend your laptop’s battery life, here’s a tip.

Look for “U” series Intel Core or AMD chips. These chips are designed for low power consumption, as the U stands for “Ultra-low power [R].”

NOTE: U-series chips are more power-efficient but run at lower clock speeds to help extend your laptop’s battery life.

Operating System

Every laptop I’ve listed here uses the Windows 10 or 11 operating system. This isn’t because I’m not too fond of Apple, but because Apple no longer makes 17-inch laptops.

Until they return the old 17-inch MacBook Pros, this list of the best 17-inch laptops under 1000 will remain a one-operating system list.

GPU

The best 17-inch laptops under $1000 typically won’t have the strongest graphics cards around. Unfortunately, your budget’s going to hamper your ability to play games.

If you’re a professional who needs a no-nonsense business laptop for daily needs, then there’s no problem. But if you want to run anything heavier than MS Paint, it’s an issue.

An integrated GPU will run Windows 10 and basic programs just fine, but I recommend looking for an NVidia RTX-equipped laptop if you want to do a lot of gaming.

Many gaming laptops I’ve featured here have NVidia GeForce GTX cards, but there is one diamond in the rough: The Asus TUF Gaming F17. This 17-inch laptop features an RTX graphics card.

However, it’s an outlier among these laptops and this price range. If you need gaming performance and can stretch your budget, I recommend the Acer Nitro 5 AN517-54-79L1.

Display Quality and Aspect Ratio

You might know this better as “screen resolution.” Whatever you call it, ensure that your laptop’s resolution is set to 1920×1080 to take advantage of your larger display.

1920×1080 is an industry-standard for Full HD screens, but you may enjoy using a different resolution, especially if you’re hooked up to an external display. Find your preferred resolution!

There’s also the matter of aspect ratio, which is normally 16:9. As you may have guessed from the name, this is the ratio of the width and height of your screen.

A good aspect ratio will make everything on your 17-inch laptop appear more well-spaced and not feel cramped to your eyes.

The best 17-inch laptops will normally have an aspect ratio of 16:9, but if you can find one, I suggest getting one with a 16:10 HD display. The extra space will come in handy!

Refresh Rate

In case you get a gaming laptop, then you’ll need a device with a faster refresh rate. I’d recommend looking for a 17-inch laptop with a 120Hz screen or faster.

You can safely ignore this if you’ll be using your laptop for video editing or other creative work, but this is vital if you plan on playing games. You’ll see the difference even outside of games!

A screen that can output more frames at high speed will provide a smoother experience, regardless of what you’re doing.

Color Accuracy

If you do video editing or photo editing work, then you understand how important color accuracy is in a laptop. This will ensure that whatever you make will always retain its colors.

The best 17-inch laptops under $1000 for creative work should have at least 100% sRGB coverage and run at 60Hz. You’ll need stability and accuracy, not high refresh rates.

A good level of color accuracy will enhance your laptop’s brightness to make watching movies more fun, as everything will look crisper and clearer!

Storage Capacity

If most of your files are stored online or have an external drive, you won’t need a 17-inch laptop with massive storage space. However, you’ll need more storage capacity if you like watching movies offline.

I’m a big fan of having more space for TV shows, so I need more storage space in my laptops. At a minimum, I suggest having 256GB of SSD storage or 1TB of HDD storage.

SSD storage has changed recently, as it’s become more affordable and commonplace. This means you can have faster data access speed even on lower-end laptops!

However, you can save even more on storage capacity by opting for a laptop with an HDD instead. Get a 1TB HDD with a speed of 7200RPM (revolutions per minute).

Despite being slower than SSDs, HDDs are sturdier and easier to recover data from in emergencies.

RAM

More memory is always a benefit in laptops and will make your experience smoother, especially if you open multiple applications simultaneously.

I recommend looking for a laptop with at least 8GB of system memory, preferably DDR4. If you’re getting a gaming laptop, you’ll benefit from upgrading to 16GB.

Gaming laptops will benefit more from memory than business laptops because it’ll make your system more responsive and speedier. However, more RAM is useful even for casual use.

Battery Life

People rocking a 17-inch laptop normally won’t be too concerned with their battery life since these desktop-replacement devices are meant to stay planted firmly on your desk and plugged in.

But if you need to move, ensure your laptop can last for 6-8 hours on a full charge. Remember to bring your charger and find a socket ASAP!

A larger laptop has more room in its chassis to sport a bigger battery, which can translate to a decent battery life. However, I say this with a fine condition.

Because 17-inch laptops under $1000 have a larger screen to power, it’s not unusual for their battery life to be proportionally shorter.

If you want to ensure that you always get good battery life, try lowering your laptop’s brightness when you’re in well-lit areas and don’t play games on it while it’s unplugged.

Build Quality

Laptops have become sturdier across the board, but for under $1000, you shouldn’t expect anything too sturdy. There’s also the matter of weight to consider.

While an all-metal build would be great, all that material adds weight. Since you’re going for size with 17-inch laptops under $1000, you’ll have to accept that most laptops in this category are also heavier.

The best 17-inch laptop will probably be made of an all-plastic chassis or with a few metal accents here and there. Sturdiness comes at a cost, and $1000 may not cut it.

One common point of failure in laptops is their hinges, so ensure that any 17-inch laptop you get has hinges that won’t snap out of their casings.

Build quality doesn’t stop at the exterior but also includes the feel of the laptop as you use it. A decent keyboard shouldn’t flex underneath your fingers or feel mushy as you type.

The best 17-inch laptops should also have stable screens that don’t flex or bend under external pressure. I acknowledge that these are big asks for a budget laptop but look for them if you can.

Extra Features

Now, all the features I’ve mentioned so far are practical or essential in some way. This section is dedicated to those slightly less essential or more niche laptop features.

Anyone who likes using their laptop in dim light will benefit from a backlit keyboard, especially if they haven’t mastered touch-typing.

Look for added security features if you want to store important digital data on your laptop but are worried that someone may pick it up and run.

The best 17-inch laptops under $1000 for security should have a Kensington lock or a fingerprint reader for both physical and digital security.

You may also want a large touch screen laptop, but touchscreens are typically reserved for smaller 2-in-1 laptops than larger clamshell laptops.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Learn a little more about the best laptops in the big leagues here!

What Is the Most Popular Sized Laptop?

The most popular, or put another way, the best laptop size, will depend on your unique use case and what you’re comfortable with. I would suggest sticking with a 14-inch screen or larger.

I’d say 15.6-inch laptops are the most popular because they balance comfort, power, and portability. This size will give you enough real estate to use your device comfortably without sticking your nose to the display.

Once you move up to a 17-inch laptop, you’re trading size for portability. If you plan to move around constantly daily, don’t think too big!

Which Laptop Screen Size Is Best for the Eyes?

You don’t want to get eyestrain while working on your laptop. Fortunately, you can lower your chances of eyestrain by getting a large-screen laptop with a good resolution!

That’s because display resolution is as important for eye health as the size of your display. Most laptops with an HD display have a 1920×1080 resolution, which is optimal.

Generally, screen size doesn’t matter. It’s more important to ensure that your screen resolution is 1920×1080. However, you may prefer a lower resolution despite your large screen.

Your results may vary, so try to find a balance that you’re comfortable with. Note that lower resolutions on larger screens will look fuzzy, which can cause dizziness.

Do 17-Inch Laptops Have Better Cooling?

Bigger laptops should be equipped with a better cooling system than other laptops. The extra space under the hood allows for greater thermal headroom and airflow.

This isn’t a hard-and-fast rule because some large laptops are designed with better cooling, and some aren’t. Larger gaming laptops usually have improved cooling.

Check the manufacturer’s specs to see whether they list the number of heat pipes in your new laptop and how many heat vents your model should have.

This should give you an idea of its cooling capability. If you get a large gaming laptop and intend to push it to the limits, you may run into thermal issues, so remember to check the cooling!

Is a 17-Inch Laptop Too Big?

I’ll level with you: 17-inch laptops are meant to deliver the experience of using a desktop PC in an all-in-one package. It may seem too big to some laptop enthusiasts, but it depends.

If you’re a college student who needs to move between classrooms, I don’t recommend getting anything larger than 15.6-inches. This is for both your benefit and everyone else in your class!

However, you’ll be fine if you plan on staying planted at your desk for a full day. You’ll learn to appreciate the larger display!

Can I Get a Good 17-Inch Gaming Laptop for Under $1000?

$1000 is enough for a decent laptop, but I recommend saving up some more or stretching your budget if you want a better gaming experience. This applies regardless of the laptop brand you’re eyeing.

You can find some good starter gaming models for under $1000, but 4-digits are the barrier between “budget laptops” and “mid-range.” However, it’s not all hopeless!

Some of the laptops I’ve featured here pack NVidia GeForce GTX cards, which are a little dated but still good for beginners. Your games will run, but they may not run smoothly.

Summary

Here’s a quick recap of the best 17-inch laptops under $1000!
